Moving into the teenage years is a difficult time for children and their parents. For most young people, this is a time of experimentation and the disregard of restrictions imposed on them by their parents.
As parents, we want to continue to protect them as we always have done and we resist their demands for freedom and independence. This often leads to conflict within the family causing a breakdown in communication and frustration on both sides.
We are qualified counsellors with many years' experience of working with young people. We have been through the process with our own teenagers and survived! We don't have a magic wand, but we can offer a number of tools to help the transition into adulthood a bit easier for everyone.
Our straightforward tips will help you to:
Our introduction evening will last approximately 2 hours. We will start by sharing our ideas to promote better communication with your teenagers and increase harmony at home.
There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and we will do our best to provide you with the basic tools needed to start taking back control and also preparing your teenagers for safer independence.
Sometimes it is not enough to have 1 : 1 counselling as problems impact the rest of the family.
Family therapy may help you and your family members understand each other better and can provide you with the skills to cope with difficult situations in a more effective way.
Family Therapy gives everyone the opportunity to express thoughts and emotions in a safe environment. Each member of the family will be invited to say why they are there and what they hope to gain from the session. We will actively seek to understand and show acceptance of each person present and help identify patterns of behaviour, family roles and rules. It may also help identify family strengths and weaknesses.
Our aim is to help each family member improve communication with each other and resolve conflict. It can often deepen family connections and provide you with the skills to get through difficult times in the future.
Whilst every family is different, this type of therapy is usually brief and frequently lasts an average of 6 - 8 sessions.
We offer in-depth workshops on the following more specific topics that seem prevalent amoung young people:
